Mpho Vele

Mpho is a driven young scholar who holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mining and Environmental Geology from the University of Venda for Science and Technology. Currently pursuing his Master's in Geology at the University of Pretoria, Mpho combines his academic prowess with a passion for education, having previously served as an Assistant Field Geological Mapping Teacher during his undergraduate years. His research focus lies in quantifying historical kimberlite tailings as a valuable source for mineral carbonation feedstock, under the guidance of Mr. Zakhele Nkosi and Dr. A. Adeleke. Mpho's commitment to education continues as he facilitates Physical Science and Geology practical sessions at the University of Pretoria. In early 2023, he showcased his research at prominent conferences, such as the Geo-congress and the Fifth National Global Change Conference. Mpho's journey epitomizes dedication to geology, education, and a bright future as a scholar with a mission to contribute significantly to both research and teaching in the field.

Avela Mantshontsho

Avela is an aspiring geologist and environmental consultant currently pursuing her MSc at the University of Pretoria. Her academic journey began with an Honours degree in Geology in 2020, conducting research on mafic mine tailings for carbon capture and storage (CCS). Since her MSc began, she has been refining her analytical skills under the guidance of her supervisor, Zakhele Nkosi, focusing on optimizing powder X-ray Diffraction techniques for quantifying mineral carbonation potential in industrial samples. Avela complemented her academic pursuits with diverse internships. In her role as a Waste and Environmental intern, she gained insights into waste management and sustainable practices at the community level. Moreover, as a Business Analyst intern, she broadened her perspective on applying scientific knowledge to real-world problem solving. Currently, Avela is an emerging environmental consultant, using her academic knowledge and practical experience to guide clients toward environmentally responsible practices and navigate the complexities of the modern environmental landscape. Her combined research and professional experiences position her as a promising force for change in academia and industry.

Thandiwe Nhlabathi

Thandiwe holds a BSc Honours in Geology and is currently completing her MSc in Geology at the University of Pretoria. Her current research which is titled “Investigating passive mineral carbonation in kimberlite tailings from Cullinan Diamond Mine, South Africa” investigates how the fine kimberlite (ultramafic diamond ore body) residues also known as slimes tailings (kimberlite slurry) from Cullinan Diamond Mine respond to the Earth’s surface conditions and if CO2 is sequestered during the spontaneous reactions between the tailings and the atmosphere. This study includes a comprehensive assessment of both the present and historic fine kimberlite residues. The overall goal is to provide insight on the behaviour of the fine kimberlite residues during rock- water-atmosphere interactions and from this possibly draw conclusions on how we can maximise tailings passive CO2 sequestration potential.
