During the Reign of the Roman Empire, some slaves and common men had to compete in sporting events in celebration of the Empire or something along those lines. In other cases combat till death was the golden rule. All the above mentioned chronology shows that since genesis physical competition was not for the faint hearted.
Then civilization and the Olympics went full circle. The Olympics are where sportsmen from different countries that were not sanctioned showcased sports attributes. In the mix of all these, body building was just getting of the ground and gymnasium was not a word on many people’s lips. So during that era physical activity was for exclusive people but even those elite athletes had normal 9 to 5 jobs. Then there was industrialization, so you know jogging was not a favorite past time after inhalation of carbon mono, dio or trioxide at work. On the other side of the world the great depression hit full circle so a decline in consumption of sports products (Not many people watched the Olympics, was T.V already invented?; Listener-ship of the Olympics declined). Because sports products are consumed with disposable income, paying Gym fees was not a priority plus the world wars did not help the fitness boom excuse the pun. Slowly general fitness was not perceived as exclusive and fitness was beginning to be seen as valuable. It was still not a lifestyle yet. Then the invention of rollerblades came into the forefront (does anybody still have a pair?).
But you can not stop the movement. Although I think the revolution of general exercise interest for the normal population was brought by the necessary evil which is technology, convenience, processed food. The same people that invested in the manufacturing of the gym equipment you use, have ties with the take-ways franchises, making Telelvison accessible to the mass, elevators, esclators and every invention made to make us move less, think less. But let me save that topic for another day. In the 20th century the movement broke stigma of belonging to only elite athletes, bodybuilders and to attract majority gender some perverts created aerobics. I must admit that the nuclear of the boom is from U.SA., mainly because, a majority (women) of their population started to become obese. Then cooperation’s began investing in Gyms to “save the nation”. Gyms became accessible for the man in the street.
South Africa is a classic example of how U.S.A. fell into this epidemic. The reason being that our lifestyle is almost a simulation of the American scenario. We are slowly showing symptoms of deteriorating health. So it’s up to you as an individual to come up with the cure before any symptoms are noticed.
