The most vivid benefit of exercise is attainment of one's goal which could be general fitness incorporated with reduced chances of future cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and high cholesterol levels. In most cases, curing not prevention of the above mentioned health problems are the reason why people join the Gym.
The most obscure benefit of exercising in a commercial Gym is the element of socialisation. The chit-chat that a gym environment provides is vital yet underestimated because communication is so second nature. We recently caught up with a circle of friends who besides the TSG prices, looking good, and prevention of future diseases say friendships and socialisation keeps them motivated and coming back to gym.
This is what Franse had to say about the crew:
How did you guys meet?
“I met Donald here at the Tuks Student Gym basically just asked him to spot me and that was it. I met a number of people in the same manner; the members here are so outgoing and easy to chat with. During the same stage there was Sambo Group exercise classes offered by the gym and I met Ewan. He was the crazy guy in the class. While I was cracking up because of Ewan’s humor Donald met Ivor (a.k.a old man). Ivor is a personal trainer at TSG and began helping Donald. As you know I trained with Donald occasionally then I brought Ewan to tag along. Like they say the rest is history”
How did the TSG environment help you initiate other friendships?
“The people here are spontaneous and outgoing. There is just a good vibe going on here. So it’s the perfect atmosphere to develop friendships”.
Does your friendship circle extend outside the Gym?
“Off course it does, I mean we sometimes hang out at the Square, for a match, play Basketball together. I sometimes call “old man” for advice on other things in life.”Copyright © University of Pretoria 2025. All rights reserved.
