The South African Research Chair in International Constitutional Law in the Faculty of Law (UP Law) at the University of Pretoria (UP), Prof Dire Tladi, invites applications for full-time Research Master's / Doctoral / Postdoctoral candidates commencing in 2022.


The South African Research Chair in International Constitutional Law in the Faculty of Law (UP Law) at the University of Pretoria (UP), Prof Dire Tladi, invites applications for full-time Research Master's / Doctoral / Postdoctoral candidates commencing in 2022.

The relevant areas of research to which this call relates are:  

(a)    The law of International Organizations, including the United Nations and the African Union

This theme covers rules governing international organisations and the contributions that international organisations, such as the UN and AU make to the governance of international law.  It covers both substantive and institutional rules. The inter-relationship between different international organisations is also of particular interest. 

(b)   Hierarchy in international law

This theme covers questions of hierarchy in the governance of international law, including peremptory norms/jus cogens and erga omnes obligations. Under this theme, issues of values and international law play a prominent role. Topics such as solidarity, the “international community”, poverty and environmental protection may be addressed.  

(c)    International law making

This theme will address the process of law-making in international law. Relevant topics under this theme will include, in addition to sources, the actors that play a role in the making of international law, including non-State actors and courts.

 

Minimum requirements:

  • For the LLM, applicants must be in possession of an LLB at the beginning of 2022;
  • For the LLD applicants must possess a Master’s degree (LLM) in international law or a related field at the commencement of 2022;
  • For a Postdoc, applicants must be in possession of an LLD in international law (or equivalent)
  • Applicants for the LLM must be 30 years old or younger in 2021
  • Applicants for the LLD must be 32 years old or younger in 2021
  • Preference will be given to equity candidates.

 

Applications must include a comprehensive CV, certified copies of educational qualifications and a motivation letter. In addition, the application must be accompanied by a mini-proposal of no more than 1000 words describing the main objectives and rationale of the proposed research.
