Posted on December 13, 2021

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime released its Global Report on Corruption in Sport on 9 December 2021. In the section on organized crime, the report cites the article by Prof Steve Cornelius “South African measures to combat match fixing and corruption in sport” International Sports Law Journal 2007/3-4 pp. 68–71.

The report highlights the United Nations' concerns about the growth in sports related corruption over the past twenty years. The report deals with a range of issues, including illegal betting, competition manipulation, abuse in sport, the susceptibility of major sporting events to corruption, and the involvement of organized crime in sports related corruption. During the preparation of the report, the UNODC invited Prof Cornelius to participate in various working groups advising the UNODC panel on aspects such as the ways in which corruption manifests itself in global sport.
