The Centre for Mediation in Africa is delighted to publish two new Practitioner Notes written by Ambassador Welile Nhlapo with Professor Chris Alden from the London School of Economics. The first paper focuses on the transition from President Nyerere to President Mandela in the mediation for Burundi and the second paper examines to transition from President Mandela to Deputy President Zuma as the lead mediator. Both papers highlight the importance of gathering regional support for such mediations. Ambassador Nhalpo is a retired South African diplomat who was deeply involved in the Burundi mediation.
