The Centre for Mediation in Africa is happy to announce the publication of a new edition in its Practitioner Notes series: The Importance of Process in the South African Peace and Constitutional Negotiations, by Dr Theuns Eloff. The paper examines the management, organizational and procedural dimensions of these processes, distinguishing between the phases of pre-negotiations, preparatory negotiations and negotiations proper. It identifies lessons that might be applicable in other transitions from authoritarianism to democracy. Dr Eloff was the head of the secretariat of the Convention for a Democratic South Africa (CODESA) in 1991 and head of the administration of the Multi-Party Negotiation Process in 1993.
