The Department of Political Sciences invites you to a seminar on the topic Lost in Translation? Gender equality in South Africa’s security and development engagements, to be presented by Signe Marie Cold-Ravnkilde on 14 April.
While South Africa commits to common international frameworks addressing gender inequalities, e.g. the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and UN Security Council resolution 1325, the emphasis on demand driven approaches to development may not encourage a coherent policy on gender equality. The seminar focuses on how global norms on gender equality in South Africa’s regional development and security policies and practices are continuously disputed, rejected, appropriated and defended by various actors. It also addresses methodological approaches and challenges to studying South African development cooperation.
Dr. Signe Marie Cold-Ravnkilde is a post-doctoral researcher at the Danish Institute for International Studies, and currently a visiting scholar at the University of Pretoria. She has previously worked on natural resource conflicts and struggles over authority in the Sahel and the recent the crisis in Mali.
