Invitation: panel discussion

Posted on March 02, 2015

The Department of Political Sciences invites you to a panel discussion on the topic "Transitional Justice and Reconciliation:Regionalism, Policy and Accountability" to be presented by Leigh Payne, Tim Murithi and Shuvai Busuman.

In the past few decades, transitional justice and reconciliation have increasingly become central to postconflict peacebuilding, from the truth commissions in Latin America to the hybrid courts in Africa. This panel seminar seeks to explore the emergence of transitional justice and reconciliation policy, and in particular the emergence of recent regional policies in the African context. It is particularly interested in what these policies have to say about how accountability is understood by the diverse actors involved in transitional justice and reconciliation processes.

Professor Leigh Payne is the director of the Latin America Centre at Oxford University. Dr Tim Murithi heads the Justice and Reconciliation in Africa Programme at the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation in Cape Town. Ms Shuvai Busuman Nyoni is Regional Advocacy Specialist at the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation in Johannesburg.
