As a board member Prof Schoeman will form part of an internationally distinguished group whose aim it is to contribute towards the development of a critical mass of engaged practitioners as well as analysts and researchers in Africa. The Board will also help the Network connect its research in order to broader global discussions. The main task for the Advisory Board on which Prof Schoeman will serve is to provide guidance for projects and goals of the APN, as well as working on the annual APN grants selection.

The African Peace Building Network is a programme of the Social Science Research Council created with the initial support of a substantial grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York. The Network was created to strengthen the field of peace building through increased contributions of African researchers, analysts and practitioners. Through research grants, conferences and publications the programme endeavours to transform the quality and scale of African research. The programme aims to consolidate the contributions of African researchers, to connect African researchers, analysts and practitioners and networks with each other as well as with policy making communities around the world.

Prof Schoeman is also currently a member of the ministerial task group of the Department of International Relations and Development (DIRCO) which is compiling a report for the minister concerning the alignment of South Africa's foreign policy with government's new development plan.
