In 2008-2009 he was the Lee Kong Chian Distinguished Fellow at Stanford University and the University of Singapore. His research focuses on East Asian politics. Prof Thompson is the author of, amongst others, Democratic Revolutions: Asia and Eastern Europe (London: Routledge, 2004) and co-editor of Dynasties, Daughters and Democrats. Female Political Leaders in Asia (Hamburg; Lit, 2012 forthcoming).
