Ismael Vadi, a member of the Executive Council for Roads and Transport in the Gauteng Provincial Government, received the DPhil degree (Political Science) with his thesis on “The prohibition of mercenarism and the prohibition and regulation of private security and military services in areas of armed conflict with specific reference to South Africa: 1994-2007”. Dr Vadi was supervised by the Department’s Prof Mike Hough.
- Unisa lecturer Jo-Ansie van Wyk, under the supervision of Prof Anton du Plessis, was awarded a DPhil in International Relations for her thesis on “South Africa’s nuclear diplomacy, 1990-2010: Securing a niche role through norm construction and state identity.
Four students received Masters degrees:
- Mr Laurence Caromba, an assistant lecturer in the department, was awarded his MA (Political Science) degree with distinction
- Ms Allison Marie Coady (MA Political Science)
- Ms Helge-Marie Loubser (MA International Relations)
- Ms Beulah Lilian Naidoo (Master of Diplomatic Studies)
- Mr Imtaz Ahmed Fazel Ellahi (Master of Security Studies)
Fourteen students received Honours degrees in International Relations and four received Honours degrees in Political Sciences. The following students were awarded their degrees with distinction:
- Ms Zamaswazi Nkosi (International Relations)
- Assistant lecturer Ms Marlie Holtzhausen (Political Science)
Twenty-four students were awarded their Bachelor’s degrees in International Relations; 15 in Political Science; and 27 received the BAdmin (International Relations) degree. Ms
Susan Lado was awarded this degree with distinction.
The department further congratulates those of its students who were awarded other degrees, among them BA and BA Journalism, and wishes all its graduates the best for the future.
