In her address, Prof Schoeman noted that the problems faced by South Africa are the result of a continuous  power struggle between the “haves” and “have-nots”, as well as a government that enriches itself more than it provides for those who feel excluded from the wealth of the country.

“My thesis is that we do not sufficiently grasp the significance of the current power contestations that are being played out daily in our country,” said Prof Schoeman. Service delivery protests, the fractured labour movement, political organisations of disenfranchised youth and fractions within the governing party are reflective of the power struggles that exist in society and contribute to instability in the country.

Solving such problems requires a much-needed regeneration of social vision that aims to end inequalities, class struggle and foster a society that is more inclusive. Academics can play a role in this process, said Prof Schoeman, through debate, exploration and observation of society. In teaching, engaging with policy-makers and publishing research, academics can make a difference to the future of South Africa.
