Research highlights

In 2013, Prof. Lorenzo Fioramonti published Gross Domestic Problem: The Politics Behind the World's Most Powerful Number, which was very well received by peers and readers the world over. He was also invited to present the research that went into the book at the Bellagio Center of the Rockefeller Foundation. Comments from Greenpeace International on the book: "This book is long overdue. Finally the political interests behind GDP have been unveiled" and Vandana Shiva: "Fioramonti shows us that going beyond GDP is a survival imperative". Interview with Reuters: http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/01/25/us-africa-investment-growth-idUSBRE90O0B420130125

Prof. Fioramonti also developed the Enabling Environment Index for the CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation, which was presented at the UN General Assembly in September and mentioned by President Barack Obama in one of his speeches.

The chapter titled "Multilateral diplomats in the early 21st Century", by Dr Yolanda Spies and contained in the 2013 Routledge Handbook on International Organisation, was a research highlight for the year. Diplomacy is a research field close to Dr Spies’ heart, both from a practical and theoretical perspective, and she has long advocated for more African contributions to the theory and practice of diplomacy - a field thus far dominated by Western-centric ideas. Moreover, multilateral diplomacy (the focus of the chapter) is the diplomatic mode most used by developing countries, because it offers myriad opportunities for innovative, legitimate, transparent and, above all, solidarity diplomacy within international organisations - the loci of global governance. It was therefore an honour to be included in this world-class compilation and to contribute a distinctly (South) African perspective.
