Prof Lall has been placed in the Essential Science Indicators list of the top 1% of
publication outputs (citations) in the discipline PHARMACOLOGY and TOXICOLOGY. Prof
Lall is internationally recognized as a leading scholar in the field of Phytomedicine which
is reflected by her appointments as an adjunct Professor at the School of Natural
Resources University of Missouri, USA (Department is 1 of the top 15 in the world), and
an Adjunct Professor at JSSAHER, Mauritius.
She is recognized internationally for her research on the potential of medicinal plants
for pharmaceutical and cosmeceutical purposes. Several pharmaceutical products for
skin-hyperpigmentation, Liver protection and for periodontal problems have been
commercialized internationally by both national and international companies in
European countries and in South Africa. Another fifteen prototypes are close to
commercialisation, which include adjuvants for Tuberculosis, skin-cancer, acne and for
periodontal diseases. Twelve South African bioprospecting permits have been granted
by the Department of Environmental Affairs, Forestry and Fisheries for the
commercialisation of researched medicinal plant leads.
Six start-up companies named, "Bio Indigenous Solution" (a community- based
company in Pretoria), "Blyde Botanics", “Valoren”, "Anoiksen", "Scholareview" and
"Looksci" (formed by young postgraduates) have resulted from Prof Lall’s research
program.
She has made a significant contribution to the field of medicinal plant science. Several
medicinal plants with valuable biological activities have been discovered and have led to
the granting of several national and international patents including in the USA, in the
European Union, ARIPO states, China, South Korea, Australia, India, Malaysia, Chile and
Japan. She has published over 200 research articles; 90 book chapters and her H-index
is 56 (researcher id:(http://www.researcherid.com/rid/A-2635-2012) and RG score is over
52 (Top 5%). Five books comprising both terrestrial and aquatic medicinal plants have
recently been published by ‘Elsevier’ and ‘Taylor and Francis’, publishers. She has been
awarded the National Research Chair in Plant Health Products from Indigenous
Knowledge Systems, by the NRF/Department of Science and Technology in 2016.
She has received several prestigious awards in recognition of her work, including “The
Order of Mapungubwe”, South Africa’s highest honour from the Honorable South
African President Jacob Zuma (April 2014), the Distinguished Young Women in
Science Award by Naledi Pandor, Honorable minister of the Department of Science and

Technology of South Africa (August 2011), the United Kingdom Royal Society/National
Research Foundation award, South Africa (2005), the National Research Foundation/ Le
Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) award” (2004-05), the University of
Pretoria Young Exceptional Performers award (2002), the S2A3-Gencor bronze medal
awarded by the South African Association for the Advancement of Science (April 1997),
the Council gold medal for her BSc Honours (April 1994), the Outstanding Achievement
award for her PhD (March 2002) and the UNESCO-L’Oreal Award for Women in Science
(one of the 10 selected candidates internationally in March 2002). She was announced
as the winner of the Gauteng Accelerator Programme (GAP) innovation competition,
(second prize nationally) which identifies emerging technology entrepreneurs for
incubation and start-up (Nov 2016). She is the winner of the Biotech Fundi Lifetime
Contribution Award by the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development
(GDARD) and the Innovation Hub (March 2017).
She is the recipient of the Top Intellectual Property Creator award (2019). She was a
finalist of the TW Kambule-National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF) 32 awards
(2017/2018) under the Emerging Researcher category. She has recently been awarded
with the exceptional supervisor’s award by the University of Pretoria (October 2021).
