Photons in turbulence

Speaker: Filippus S. Roux (National Laser Centre)

Abstract:

Quantum communication provides a new paradigm in information security. When
information is encoded in terms of spatial modes, one can obtain increased security
and higher information capacity. However, when such high-dimensional quantum
communication is implemented through free space, the turbulence in the atmosphere
causes a degradation of the communication process. It is necessary to understand
this degradation process. The evolution of the photonic quantum state through
turbulence is modelled by an infinitesimal propagation equation, which is derived,
solved and then applied for single photon and two-photon scenarios.
