Professor Matthias (Matt) Haus is a medical scientist, specialist allergologist, and academic affiliated with the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Pretoria. He is also a prominent businessman and philanthropist. Until recently, he served as the Lead Independent Non-Executive Director on the Holding Company Board of Adcock Ingram, a Bidvest-controlled public company. He has chaired numerous organisations, including the Professional Provident Society Financial Services Board and the Allergy Society of South Africa.
Professor Haus directed clinical pharmaceutical research globally for AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson for over 35 years, serving as Executive Vice President. His international career has included extensive travel and residence in locations such as Shanghai, China. He has presented widely across all continents on medical, philosophical, and business-related topics, earning numerous significant awards and distinctions.
He has a particular interest in the care of patients living with cancer and is the founder of the Moments in Time Oncology Project.
His accolades include an Honorary Fellowship of the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (2020), the South African Academy of Arts and Sciences Award (2003), the South African Financial Mail Award for Science and Technology (1989), and the University of the Witwatersrand Award for Oncology (2005).
Professor Haus is also known as an engaging after-dinner speaker and television presenter. A lifelong musician and composer, he began performing at the age of three. He has given musical soirées and concerts, performing with ensembles such as the National South African Youth Orchestra (1966), the East London Symphony Orchestra (violin), and the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra under Richard Cock (piano, 2003).
He has a deep interest in existential philosophy and is a devoted student of Viktor Frankl’s logotherapy school of thought, on which he has authored several books.
