Prof Izelle Smuts
Prof Izelle Smuts is a paediatric neurologist and the Head of the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at Steve Biko Academic Hospital and the University of Pretoria. She specialises in neurodevelopmental disorders, neuromuscular disorders, and metabolic diseases. She obtained her MBChB and MMed in Paediatrics from the University of Pretoria and completed a PhD in Biochemistry at North-West University. Prof Smuts leads the Paediatric Neurology Training Unit and is actively involved in clinical care, academic teaching, and research. Her research interests include mitochondrial disorders, cerebral palsy, and paediatric neurogenetics, and she participates in both national and international collaborative research initiatives.
