Dr Melantha Coetzee completed both her undergraduate degree (MBChB) and postgraduate degree (MMed Paediatrics) through the University of Pretoria. She subsequently obtained a Fellowship in Paediatrics and a Certificate in Neonatology through the College of Paediatricians of South Africa. Dr Coetzee currently serves as Head of the Division of Neonatology at Steve Biko Academic Hospital, where she practises as a subspecialist in Neonatology.

She is actively involved in undergraduate teaching for the MBChB programme at the University of Pretoria, contributing to training in Years III, IV, and VI. In recognition of her contributions to medical education, she received the University of Pretoria Faculty Teaching & Learning Award in the emerging category in 2020. Dr Coetzee has presented her innovative work on alternative methods of undergraduate training—particularly through the use of educational games—at both the Southern African Association of Health Educationalists (SAAHE) congress and the University of Pretoria’s Flexible Futures congress.
