Recognition given to emeritus professors

Proff Oberholzer and Breytenbach were honoured for their research , their supervision of PhD , their positions of leadership in the Faculty and in the Department of Old Testament Studies, as well as their ground-breaking work in indigenous Bible translation.

Prof Breytenbach was involved in the first translation of the Bible into isiNdebele, which was presented to the Ndebele community in 2012. Prof Oberholzer, in turn, was involved in a Bible for the deaf, a project which took the limited language ability of the hearing-impaired into consideration and created a Bible translation for their unique needs. He was also involved in a concordance of the Afrikaans Bible translation (1983). Both professors contributed to the Afrikaans Bible translations of 1983 and are currently working on the Bible Society's The Bible in Afrikaans: A direct translation, which is to appear in 2017.

In recognition of the contribution made by the University, the Faculty and the Department, Ds Gerrit Kritzinger, executive head of the Bible Society of South Africa, presented copies of these two Bibles to the University. Prof Niek Grové accepted them on behalf of the University.
