Prestige ‘FOKUS’ Conference held at Theology

Posted on September 19, 2011

The conference is held every four years. This project is part of the FOKUS lectures in the Department – FOKUS is the abbreviation of Forschung Optimal und Kritische Untersuchung (Optimal Research and Critical Investigation), coined by the Head of the Department, Prof. Gert Steyn. In Afrikaans the word “fokus” also means to focus attention on something specific.

The prestige FOKUS lectures in New Testament Ethics are called “prestige” due to the fact that in a life cycle period of 10 years, only two of these conferences will be held in South Africa, and for us it is indeed a prestige event. The purpose of the “prestige” lectures is to invite experienced and respected international scholars who would like to join the venture at the University of Pretoria in South Africa, build lasting relationships and publish high quality literature in this specific research field that may contribute to academy, church and society. The title of “prestige lectures” is not to be seen as an exclusive venture where only a few chosen elite are to participate. In fact, it is just the opposite. The purpose of the lectures was to build bridges between people of different continents and ages – to bring first world and third world scholars in contact and to develop perspectives together.
