Given the fact that the Department of New Testament Studies at the University of Pretoria is

  • one of the largest New Testament departments at a residential University in South Africa
  • situated in Africa
  • a multi-church, ministerial training institution
  • a department with an exceptional academic history

we as a staff recognise our role as a leading national role player and a role player of international standing, and we constantly strive to take this responsibility seriously.

The Department of New Testament Studies participates in realising the vision and mission of the Faculty of Theology. This is done through a commitment to –

  • innovative and excellent teaching for undergraduates and postgraduates, which meets international standards;
  • quality research of international standard, inter alia via NTW FOKUS to the hosting of yearly international conferenceson current scholarly issues involving scholars of stature in the field and;
  • promoting a relevant and structured research culture by identifying possible postgraduate students in their third and fourth year of study, developing young scholars and holding frequent postgraduate colloquia where students can report on and discuss the research that has been done;
  • Africa involvement, especially through the efforts of Dr Jean-Claude Loba-Mkole as Extraordinary Professor and Dr Elijah Mahlangu as the latest joining member in the Department to liaise with possible postgraduate students and institutions in Africa,as well as facilitating publications in Africa through the publication arm of Lit-Verlag’s book series “Theology in Africa”.
  • relevant community engagement, via the respective denominational partners of the Facultyand to broader communities on a local and national level; and
  • the personal and academic development of lecturers in the Department.
