World-renowned New Testament scholar visits Theology

Putting Jesus in His Place, and his recent research on Jesus and the Rise of 19th European Nationalism.

Through his visit, Prof Moxnes rejuvenated excitement, especially in African scholars whose work has been influenced and shaped by his ideas. He also has a long-standing friendship with Prof Andries van Aarde, a conspicuous African New Testament scholar at the University of Pretoria, and both have collaborated in various projects. The latest was a joint publication together with other Scandinavian and North-American scholars on 19th century Jesus studies, published by the University of Bologna in Italy. Professors Moxnes and Van Aarde also worked together in the prestigious New Testament Context Group.

More significantly, his coming has made it possible to begin discussions, which will be further explored by Dr Zoro Dube, a former student of Prof Moxnes, Professors Gert Steyn, Ernest van Eck and Kobus Kok, over collaboration between the Faculty of Theology at the University of Oslo and the Department of New Testament Studies at the University of Pretoria. The envisaged collaboration has the mutual benefit of bringing academic cross pollination between the North and South, also making it possible for UP’s postgraduate students to participate in current and global theories in New Testament studies.
