Victory over Varsity College is the confidence booster Tuks needed in the Varsity Netball Tournament
Tuks netball coach Amanda Mynhardt's prediction that this Varsity Tournament would be one of surprises turned out to be entirely accurate.
After the first two rounds the Madibaz is topping the log. Nobody would have expected that to happen since last year the team lost five of their Varsity Tournament games.
On Sunday in Stellenbosch Tuks was involved in the first upset of the tournament when they lost 62-47 to Madibaz. Yesterday, Madibaz surprised again by beating Northwest 52-48. UJ is the only other unbeaten team.
Tuks got the better of Varsity College in their second game, winning 53-35.
The opening quarter was a scrappy affair, with both sides guilty of early errors. While Tuks began to settle into a rhythm, Varsity College showed resilience and stayed in touch, trailing just 14-9 at the first break.
In the second quarter, the newcomers grew in confidence, going goal for goal with the Stripe Generation. Tuks were leading 23-18 at halftime. During the third quarter, Tuks genuinely stepped up, dictating play to set up a commanding lead of 39-26. From then on there was no stopping Tuks. The ended up winning 53-35.
As to what brought about the change, Mynhardt said she advised the players to be more mobile.
"We tried to play a holding game in the first two quarters. It was, however, quite a physical game, especially in the circle. We did not get the advantage of that. So we changed the game. Bringing in more momentum. Bringing in more movement with Marichelle Visagie at the back opening up the circle.
"It was good to get the win as it is a confidence booster especially with such a young squad as we are having. They know now what it feels like to win."
According to Mynhardt no player can however afford to rest on their laurels.
"From now on it is going to be important to make sure we tick all the right boxes. This week as team we are going to break down the game against Varsity College so the players can understand where they have been better and what needs to be done for them to grow."
Visagie who showed leadership in the shooting circle deservedly got the Player of the Match award. In an on court television interview she admitted being happy as to yesterday's outcome.
"So glad that we came back from obviously a loss. This how we build character. Today (yesterday) we showed up being 1% better that on Sunday. That is how we are going to go about things during this Varsity campaign."
Zionne Grobler impressed on the defence for Tuks.
On Monday in Bloemfontein Tuks is playing Kovsies at 15:00. It promises to be a humdinger, especially since Kovsies lost yesterday against UJ by three points. Last year Kovsies has beaten UJ in the Varsity final.
