#TuksNetball: Tuks on track to repeat the 2019 Varsity Netball success

Posted on September 05, 2023

The TuksNetball team is on track to achieve something they have only managed to do once. That is, to remain unbeaten throughout the Varsity Netball Tournament.

Last night in Stellenbosch, they notched up their seventh consecutive victory, beating NWU 67-52. In doing so, they ensured they topped the log after the conclusion of the pool games. Tuks is the only team that has yet to lose a game. The last time they were unbeaten throughout the tournament was in 2019.

In the seven games, Tuks scored 439 goals and conceded only 294. On average, it means Tuks won 62-42.

But things are certainly going to heat up over the next two weeks. On Monday, September 11, Tuks will face off against Maties at the Rembrandt Hall in the semi-final.

Judging by the results, Maties has had a tough time on court. They just managed to qualify for the semi-finals by winning four of the seven games. In doing so, they lead Kovsies by one point for the fourth spot on the log.

These facts and statistics mean nothing to TuksNetball's head coach, Jenny van Dyk. She has, after all, been long enough in the "Game of Netball" to realise that any team is only as good as the last game they played.

It should also be remembered that Maties got the better of Tuks twice during the USSA Netball Championships in July. In the final, they beat the Tuks 49-42.

In an after-the-match interview on SuperSport, Van Dyk said there will be no resting on their laurels for anyone.

"My campaign for any tournament starts with a good game plan. It means trying to figure out every possible scenario beforehand. Still, nothing is ever set in stone. As a coach, I constantly tweak things to see if I can give the players an edge.

"We will certainly have a sit-down before the Maties games and analyse what worked and what did not. There is always some aspect of our game we can improve on."

The TuksNetball co-captain, Alice Kennon, was brilliant last night against NWU. As a goal shooter, Kennon only missed one out of 20 goal attempts in the first half. It did not seem as if anything could faze her.

In the second half, she again ensured that the numbers on the scoreboard were continuously changing. Proving why she is the most consistent shooter in the tournament. She deservedly got the FNB Player of the Match award.

As the forever team player, Kennon, said, "We have really been working hard. For me, it is about doing my job as best I can. I have put in a lot of hours under the post, and it's nice to see that now that we are getting to the crunch games, my performance remains consistent."
