#TuksNetball: Tuks keeps on dominating in Varsity Netball

Posted on September 03, 2019

Another Monday, a different venue, new opponents but that is about all what changed as Tuks dominated again last night this time in Stellenbosch beating the Madibaz 51-32 in the Varsity Netball Tournament.

For the second consecutive weekend, Tuks gained a bonus point. In doing so, they ensured they remain the log leaders with ten points after two games. Maties, the only other unbeaten team so far, is second with nine points followed by Kovsies and Madibaz both on five points.

The big difference between Tuks and Madibaz boiled down to on-court confidence. The Tuks players never waited for things to happen. They went about creating opportunities from the very first minute while the Madibaz seemed to be more reactive in their approach.

Tuks's captain, Tshina Mdau, who was again outstanding, credited her team's dominance to pure determination.

"Every one of us knew what was expected and persisted in staying to the agreed game plan. It is still not a perfect performance. There are definitely some aspects of our play we still need to work on."

A pillar of strength of Tuks in the circle is how the goal shooter, Venetia Grobler, has been described and with good reason. Nothing seems to faze her. It is due to her steady hand that Tuks ended up with goal percentage of 84%. Grobler deservedly received the player of the match award.

She, however, was quick to point out that any goal shooter can be only as good as her teammates allow her to be.

"It was a total team effort," is how Grobler summarized the team's victory.

In the time they played together Mdau, and Marlize de Bruin worked in tandem to ensure there is a constant flow of ball to the Tuks goal shooters. They impressed by how they managed to keep the Madibaz defenders guessing all the time.

Akosua Mensah seems to get better each time she plays. Against the Madibaz, she was instrumental in undermining the shooter's confidence with her sense of awareness and on-court intelligence.

Jasmine Ziegelmeier managed in the time she was playing to get the Madibaz wing-attack doubt as to whom she should pass the ball to in the circle.

"I don't mind bleeding as long as my team wins," seems to be the attitude with which Lungile Mthembu plays. She sustained a nasty gash under her one eye and was forced to leave the court, however, the moment the bleeding stopped, she was back intent to disrupting the Madibaz attacks.

Tuks's next game is on Sunday in Port Elizabeth against UWC. On Monday at the same venue, they will be playing Maties.
