Tuks picked up a four-pointer at the NMU Indoor Centre in Port Elizabeth on Monday evening, by beating the Madibaz 45-24 in what was entertaining but a low scoring affair.
Tuks didn’t waste time and were off to a quicker start than the Madibaz. The visitors put a few scores on the board very quickly without reply from the Madibaz. It took the first five minutes for Madibaz to wake up and start making sure Tuks did not run away with the game early on.
Tuks were the better side, had more attempts and opened up a 6-15 lead at the end of the first quarter.
At the start of the second quarter the Madibaz started as Tuks did in the first, and got the first scores without reply. Tuks only got their first score of the second quarter after a whole two minutes of domination by the Madabiz. Lusi Twani was brilliant and fighting hard for the Madibaz making sure of her shots. Tuks were struggling and only got two scores after five minutes through the 19-year-old Chante Louw.
Tuks had some possession of the ball but couldn’t add to their score for a while. Madibaz captain Nandipha Jack was doing her best to break up Tuks play, but the Madibaz made too many errors on attack, which cost them. It was a below average scoring half for both teams with the score just 10-22 at halftime.
Tuks were back on top in the third quarter with two quick scores before the Madibaz also got going through Twani, getting her eighth score with just nine attempts at that stage. The third quarter went by with both teams playing good netball but not doing a lot of scoring. Tuks kept their lead to end the quarter 16-30.
The visitors took the power play with the start of the final quarter, but they could only get 4 points and the Madibaz managed just 2. The Madibaz took their power play with five minutes remaining, but needed to make up 20 points. Even with the power play the low scoring continued with both teams only scoring once during that period. Tuks eventually winners, 45-24.
This was the Madibaz’s first defeat of the Varsity Netball season and put Tuks level with the hosts on 10 points.
