Juzelri Garbers might just be one of the cleverest players to represent TuksNetball in the Varsity Tournament from Monday.
Don’t say it to the second year BA Law-student, because being modest as she is she will deny it outright. But it is not anyone that gets accepted to be a Golden Key student. You need to be serious about your studies and consistently be able to give the right answers to exam questions.
Golden Key is an internationally recognised, non-profit organisation affiliated with over 400 universities throughout Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, The Bahamas and the United States. The Society’s mission is to enable members to realise their potential by connecting individual achievement with service and lifelong opportunity.
In spite of her inquisitive nature being on an forever quest to learn something new on any subject Garbers is certainly not just a pure academic.
Netball is a true passion. Garbers relishes the challenge to try and foil opposition team’s attacks playing as goalkeeper of goal defence for TuksNetball or Gauteng’s provincial team.
She and her fellow defenders must be doing something right as Jenny van Dyk (TuksNetball head coach) is of the opinion that one of her team’s strong points is their play on defence.
Garbers is of the opinion that part of their success on defence is because she and Jasmine Ziegelmeier and Shadine van der Merwe each bring something different to the counter attacks.
“It does not matter against whom we get to play we have the ability to disrupt their goal scoring attempts because of our great variety of skills. We can adapt to whatever happens on the court.
“My strong point is that I can force the opposition to make mistakes when they are on the attack. I can also help create good ‘switches’.
“Jasmine’s length is a definite asset as it enables her too often get her fingers on the ball steering it a way from the goal. She is also good on winning rebounds. I consider Shadine as one of the best interceptors there are.”
Tuks will start their Varsity campaign playing first against Kovsies on Sunday and Monday against Pukke. According to Garbers, they will have to keep their wits about them to ensure a victory.
“They are certainly two of the best teams in the Varsity Competition. There is not a moment that you can rest on your laurels playing against them.
“What makes Pukke a dangerous team to play against is because they never give up. They can be ten goals down and still; they will keep on fighting back. The same goes for Kovsies.”
To take a break from her studies and playing netball Garbers loves to cook and bake. It helps her relax.
Her ideal meal for special friends would be a Namibian steak with a homemade mushroom sauce and special creamy vegetable dish. Dessert would be cheesecake.
