UP-Tuks showed good composure to record a solid 61-50 Varsity Netball victory over UJ in Pretoria.
The opening stages of the match were tense as both sides looked to take the early initiative.
UJ were clearly not going down without a fight and made UP-Tuks work hard, but it was not enough to prevent the home side from taking a 16-11 lead into the first break.
Neither side was willing to give an inch and the battle for possession was fierce as they traded goals regularly.
The cushion that Tuks had built up in the first period proved invaluable as they took a slender 29-26 lead into the half-time break.
Tuks made a determined start to the second half and regained control in a dominant period of play, but UJ were hanging tough and worked their way right back into the game.
The home side took their Samsung Pivot Shot Play in the third period and stretched their lead to 33-39 to put some daylight between themselves and UJ.
UJ took their Samsung Pivot Shot Play soon afterwards, but battled to take advantage as Tuks held a 46-37 lead at the end of the third period.
Tuks secured the bonus point early in the last quarter, and despite some hard work from the visitors UJ could not overhaul them although they did have the consolation of earning a bonus point themselves.
