Going virtual: Google Arts & Culture

Posted on December 10, 2021

If you cannot visit the UP Museums in person or in a time of global restrictions and further potential lockdowns, simply search “ University of Pretoria Museums.” More than 724 works in the museum collection are a click away, as well as an array of seven online exhibitions or stories are available at https://artsandculture.google.com on the Google Arts & Culture app, available to download on Android and iOS.The UP Museums signed a partnership with the Google Cultural Institute in 2020 and after months of research, digital image content and endless metadata, it was successfully launched in August 2021 on the virtual global platform for Google Arts & Culture.

Many of the UP’s signature works are included and are drawn from the diversity of artworks, ceramics, sculptures, including items from storage. Images are in high resolution, meaning visitors can get closer to some paintings and viewers can search according to timeline, category and even select  any works according to their favourite colour. This opportunity provides wider public access to works and exhibitions, as well as to compare works from other art, museum and cultural institutions worldwide. You can travel virtually to visit the UP Museums and enjoy an online experience. Look forward to some new exhibitions and more of the institution’s collections growing online again in 2022.
