Dr Tshepiso Scott receives the University of Michigan African Presidential Scholars (UMAPS) Fellowship

Posted on June 08, 2023

Dr Tshepiso Scott was the proud recipient of the prestigious University of Michigan African Presidential Scholars (UMAPS) Fellowship Program in 2023.  This is a yearly program that aims to support a number of career researchers on the African Continent from specific countries by  offering them a semester-long research residency at the prestigious University of Michigan. The program covers a number of research areas, including  law. Dr Scott departed for the US on the 4th of January 2023 and returned on 31st May 2023, having worked on research in the area of consumer protection law. In Michigan, she had the privilege of working alongside Professor Kyle Logue, from the University of Michigan's Law School, who provided her with mentorship and guidance on her research.

When asked what she was most looking forward to contributing with her research, Dr Scott explained that,

“ during the UMAPS program I worked on various papers regarding access to redress for consumers in South Africa. I look forward to submitting these papers for publication in order to contribute to the body of knowledge on consumer law, particularly by highlighting issues that frustrate consumer access to redress; and, more importantly, presenting possible solutions in respect of these challenges.”

During the course her participation in the program, Dr Scott had the extraordinary opportunity to present her research findings on two occasions. She highlighted that the engagement that flowed from these presentations added depth to her research and further assisted her with contextualising and framing the challenges and solutions she was presenting.

Overall, Dr Scott highlights that being in Ann Arbour and at the University of Michigan has created a space for her to think extensively and more critically about consumer rights and access to redress.

We are glad to have you back Dr Scott!
