Posted on March 10, 2023

Professor Van Zyl, a professor of Tax Law in the Department of Mercantile Law at UP Law, recently received an award from the African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF) for his contribution to ATAF’s roles in tax reform in Africa.

“I’m deeply honored to receive this award,” said Professor Van Zyl. He added that, “The credit also goes to my fellow ATAF Value Added Tax Technical Committee (VATTC) members and the staff of ATAF. It is specifically the work of the ATAF VAT TC that resulted in VAT policy and legislative reform in Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Kenya, Mauritius, Uganda and Tanzania”.

In 2022, Professor Van Zyl was appointed to the African Tax Research Network (ATRN) Advisory Board at the ATRN 7th Annual Congress that was held in Accra, Ghana. The main purpose of the ATRN Advisory Board is to set the strategic academic aims of the ATRN and to implement the aims to bridge the gap between academia and policy makers. Professor van Zyl says that, “Academics are often criticised for working in silos. As a board member, I look forward to the collaborative research between academia and revenue authorities in Africa to further strengthen sustainable fiscal policies”.
