Born on 15th March 1959 in Łódź, Poland.

Education: MSc (Engineering), Technical University of Łódź, 1981, PhD, Strathclyde University in Glasgow,  1989, Habilitation (DSc), University of Warsaw, 1999 and the State title of Professor conferred by the President of the Republic of Poland in 2007.

Employment: 1981-1992: Technical University of Łódź, Poland, junior lecturer to senior lecturer; 1992-2015: University of Natal (later University of KwaZulu-Natal), lecturer to senior professor, Head of School of Mathematical Sciences 2005-2007, research professor 2011-2015, Academic Leader: Research in 2015; 2008-: Technical University of Łódź, extraordinary professor;

In 1992 joined the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics at the University of Natal; Senior Professor since 2008-2015 and a Research Professor 2011-2015. The Head of the School of Mathematical Sciences 2005-2007 and Academic Leader: Research in 2015.

Fellow of the University of KwaZulu-Natal since 2013.

DST/NRF Chair in Mathematical Models and Methods in Biosciences and Bioengineering, University of Pretoria, from January 2016.

Research interests: nonlocal, integro-differential models in kinetic theory, mathematical biology and fragmentation-coagulation theory, asymptotic analysis of multiple scale problems. 

Authored/co-authored 5 research monographs including:  Analytic Methods for Coagulation-Fragmentation Models, CRC Press (Taylor &Francis Group, 2019, (with W. Lamb and P. Laurençot). Methods of Small Parameter in Mathematical Biology, Birkhäuser, 2014, (with M. Lachowicz), Difference and Differential Equations in Mathematical Modelling, Cambridge University Press, 2013, Perturbations of positive semigroups with applications, Springer, 2006, (with L. Arlotti), and  Singularly Perturbed Evolution Equations with Application to Kinetic Theory, World Scientific, 1995 (with J.R. Mika).

Author/co-author of over 125 refereed research papers.  Google Scholar lists over 2152 citations, giving the h-index of 24, Scopus – 899 citations with h-index of 18.

Over 40 plenary and invited lectures and courses at international or national conferences, workshops and schools.

Visiting Professor at the University of Franche-Comte, France, in 2004; currently Visiting Professor at the University of Strathclyde since 2010.

In 2012 received the South African Mathematical Society Award for Research Distinction, in 2013 received Cross of Merit (Silver) of the Republic of Poland, in 2014 received the 1st prize in the competition for the best paper in applied mathematics organized by Centre for Applications of Mathematics (Gdańsk)

Editor-in-Chief of  Afrika Matematika (Springer),  an Advisory Editor of Mathematical Methods for the Applied Sciences (Wiley), Associate Editor of Quaestiones Matematicae, member of Editorial Board of Evolution Equations and Control Theory, Differential Equations and Dynamical Systems (Springer) and of the AIMS Library Series of the Cambridge University Press.

Completed supervision/co-supervision of 12 Ph.D students and over 20 MSc students.

Vice-president of the South African Mathematical Society 2001-2005, Chairman of the South African Committee for the International Mathematical Union 2005-2008.

Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences since 2017, member of the Academy of Science of South Africa since 2006, Research Associate of the National Institute of Theoretical Physics and an Associate Faculty of the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences.
