S2A3 Scientific Awards 2016

Invitation for nominations for the S2A3 Scientific Awards, 2016:

  • South Africa Medal (Gold)
  • British Association Medal (Sliver)

The South Africa Medal (Gold) is awarded to a senior scientist who has made an exceptional contribution to the advancement of science, either on a broad front or in a specialized field.

British Association Medal (Silver) is awarded to a scientist under the age of 40 years as at the closing date on this notice that has provided evidence of outstanding capability and achievements by way of publications, discoveries or special skills, in particular when measured against international scientific standards.

Women in Science Award

The Department of Science and Technology is calling for nominations to recognise and award excellence by women scientists and researchers. The South African Women in Science Awards encourage and reward women scientists, and researchers, and also profile them as role models for younger women. The awards will be made to women who are South African citizens or permanent residents.

 Africa Thesis Awards 2016

The African Studies Centre Leiden has an award for students whose Masters thesis has been completed on the basis of research conducted on Africa. The award aims to encourage student research and writing on Africa and to promote the study of African cultures and societies.

Any final-year student who has completed his/her Masters thesis with distinction (80% or higher or a Dutch rating of at least an 8) at a university in Africa or the Netherlands may apply for the award. The thesis has to be based on independent empirical research related to Africa in socio-geographical, economic, political, juridical or anthropological issues or focusing on the humanities, such as history, religion and literature but with the exception of language and/or semiotic studies. The thesis must have been examined in the twelve months prior to the deadline.

The award consists of a prize of €500, and publication of the winning thesis in the ASCL’s African Studies Collection.

The deadline for the submission of theses this year is 10 July 2016 at 24:00.
