If it were up to the TuksWomensRugby team, they would already be pencilled in for the 2025 FNB Varsity Cup Women’s final on 11 April—because for captain Jessica Maré, it’s all about "bringing back the glory to Tuks."
For the past two seasons, Tuks have stumbled at the semi-final stage, but Maré is confident that those lessons have only made the team stronger. What excites her most? New players brought in fresh energy.
"They have brought a different dynamic to the team. As senior players, we sometimes fall into a routine, sticking to what we know. But the newcomers have forced us to evolve, which has been exciting."
Maré also believes this season’s squad is more well-balanced than before:
"Our forward pack has always been strong, but now we have a backline that is just as impactful—defensively and tactically."
The journey to the final starts Friday, 14 March, at 14:30, when Tuks take on UWC in Cape Town for their opening clash.
Captaining Tuks is nothing new to Maré. She did so also last year. As a captain, the crucial thing is never to panic during a game. No matter what is happening on the field.
"A good captain is at all times focused on the game. You are the link that connects the training and our coaches to what happens on the match day. A good captain should be able to gauge your teammate's emotions. If I pick up that one of my teammates is nervous, I will put them at ease."
Maré has wanted to play rugby for as long as she can remember. Her first memory of the game was kicking the ball with her father in the garden. Unfortunately, while at school, she never had the opportunity to play. Only when she started studying at Tuks did she get to sidestep and dummy with the egg-shaped ball.
"What I like most about rugby is the physical aspect of the game. When I played basketball, I was always told not to get too physical as it is not rugby. To tackle is something I love. Putting it all out on the line, you go for the big hit, whether you are scared or not. The challenge is ensuring you get out on top when tackling."
But rugby is not only for Maré about making big hits.
"What I love about rugby is the strategy that comes with playing. You can never only rely on brute strength. You have to outsmart your opponents."
As for her role as an eight-man, Maré said, "My best trait is showing up for the team when things get tough and leading by example. I also back myself when kicking for the poles.
