With less than three months remaining before the qualifying window closes on July 23, a total of 49 South African athletes have achieved either the A or B standards for the IAAF World Championships in London.
With Athletics SA reverting to the former double-standard system, 20 athletes have achieved the A qualifiers and 29 have met the required B qualifiers in their events.
While the qualifying window for the marathon, race walks, decathlon and heptathlon opened on January 1, 2016, the window period for all other disciplines opened on October 1.
In addition to the athletes listed below, Phil-Mar van Rensburg (javelin throw), Fredriech Pretorius (decathlon) and Claudia Heunis (100m hurdles) receive wild card entries for winning African titles in their disciplines last season, though their potential inclusion in the squad will rest with the ASA selectors.
Stephen Mokoka and Caster Semenya, who have both achieved the standards in other events, also qualify for the men’s 10 000m and women’s 1 500m contests respectively, as the reigning African champions.
While Wayde van Niekerk has not yet met the required standard for the 400m sprint, he also receives an automatic entry from the IAAF as the defending world champion.
Though ASA has confirmed only A-standard qualifiers will be guaranteed a place in the final team, the federation is expected to consider B-qualifiers in some events, with the nation limited to three entrants per discipline.
