Akani Simbine proved again last night at the Diamond League Meeting in Zurich that he is undoubtedly one of the best in the world when he sprinted to a second place finish in the 100 metres.Only Asafa Powell, a former world record holder, was faster than the South African. The Jamaican won in 9.94s. It was the 98th time that ran a sub 10 seconds race.
Simbine literally managed to pip Ben Youssef Meité (Ivory Coast) on the line to finish second in 9.99s. Meite was also timed at 9.99s.
Powell, Yousseff and Simbine are also the top three sprinters in the Diamond League. Powell finished first with 26 Diamond League points with Yousseff second with 24 points and Simbine third with 18 points.
LJ van Zyl made the most of his opportunity as official reserve in the 400-hurdles after Nicholas Bett (Kenia) withdrew. Van Zyl finished third in 48.80s which also meant that he finished third overall in the Diamond League standings. Kerron Clement (USA) won in 48.72s with Javier Culson (Puerto Rico) second in 48.79s.
Wenda Nel finished fourth in the 400-hurdles for women, running a time of 55.15s. Shamier Little (USA) won in 53.97s.
