TuksGolf : USSA honours (yet again)!

Posted on December 12, 2011

The tournament would be remembered for the severe weather conditions that the students had to endure during the week, from extreme windy conditions on Monday to rain and cold on Thursday.

The 180 individual players from 20 institutions were tested under these extreme conditions to perform to their potential against the top student golfers South Africa has to offer.

The first two days' format was individual strokeplay whereby the various players competed individually as well as for their institutions in order to determine the individual strokeplay champion for men and women but also the mens team strokeplay title.

After four grueling rounds it was Tuks' Nobuhle Dlamini who claimed the women's title and CPUT's Jacquin Hess who walked away with top honors for the men's competition.

The matchplay section of the competition took off from Wednesday morning whereby the men's team from Tuks continued with their good performances from the strokeplay event.

The first match was against the hosts and old time rivals of the University of Stellenbosch, whereby Tuks came out tops with a close 5-4 win.

The second round of the matchplay competition the team from Pukke (North West University) that qualified for the A- division for the first time since 1994 realized what the level of golf is in the A- division when they lost against Tuks 6.5-2.5. Rounds 3 and 4 took place on Friday against the three top ranked institutions in the competition, Tuks, Exercise Teachers Academy (ETA) and Cape Peninsula University of Technology. Tuks and ETA quickly set the pace leaving CPUT behind in the early stages of the afternoon session, but it was Tuks that were able to secure the victory after both Tuks and ETA finished at the top of the leaderboard whereby Tuks won through a count out procedure.

The women's matchplay title was won by Tuks's Nicole Garcia after claiming the top position for the round-robin system was completed.

At the prize giving function the following players and staff from Tuks was selected for the USSA Golf team competing in the Challenge Interprovincial tournament in May 2012 at Cullinan Golf Club:

Stefan Rall, Werner Ferreira, Llewellyn van Leeuwen (Coach), Emile Steinmann (Manager).
