Yolande Springveldt

Position, academic & professional qualifications

Mrs Yolande Springveldt is a lecturer in the Department of Mercantile Law. She holds the degrees BProc (RAU/UJ) and LLM (Pret) and has been a golden key member since 2008.

She was admitted as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa in 2004 and had been practising as such prior to her appointment as lecturer in 2015.

Academic and professional experience

Mrs Springveldt served as prosecutor after completion of her pre-graduate studies for 7 years during which time she prosecuted in regional court matters and served as control prosecutor. She left the Department of Justice in order to pursue a career as a litigant and   served articles with Savage Jooste & Adams Inc in Pretoria.Thereafter she was admitted as an attorney of the High Court of South Africa and commenced practising for her own account. She practised as an attorney for more than 11 years, specialising in Labour Law litigation as well as Law of Contracts and Civil litigation.

In addition hereto she served as part-time lecturer at Varsity College Pretoria from 2003 up to 2009 lecturing in Criminal Law, Law of Evidence, Admintsrative Law as well as Sport Law and Media Law for students in various academic disciplines.

She also worked as ad-hoc facilitator for the Foundation for Professional Development in Pretoria and in particular the Labour Relations Modules focusing on “ Labour Relations for medical professionals”. She was also responsible for the development of the Labour Relations course content.

She joined the University of Pretoria Law in the Department of Mercantile Law as a lecturer in September 2015.

Areas of specialisation

Her main field of interest is Labour Law and Law of Contracts.

Ms Springveldt is a specialist in conducting disciplinary hearings and enquiries as well as in representing parties at these forums.

Academic and professional memberships

Yolande is an admitted attorney. She is also a member of the Law Society of the Northern Provinces.

Research Interests

  1. Strikes and the constitutional imperatives on the right to freedom of association and organisation.

  2. Review in the labour courts.

  3. The integrity of the LRA within the South African legal framework.

Conferences Presented

Nelson Mandela Metro University “Re-introducing the strike ballot”

This paper centred around the introduction of a strike ballot as a possible deterrant to strike violence and intimidation and does form part of my LLD thesis.

Nelson Mandela Metro University “The interface between social justice and the law of delict: A South African perspective”

This paper explores the courts’ response to the impact of the Bill of Rights on the law of delict and the extension of the employer’s duty. This research forms part of my LLD thesis.
