Prof. Monuko du Plessis joined the University of Pretoria in 1973 as Research Officer in the fields of microelectronics and optoelectronics. He was the Director of the Carl and Emily Fuchs Institute for Microelectronics (CEFIM) at the University of Pretoria from 1991 to 2012, and is currently Acting Director of CEFIM and a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering at the University of Pretoria.

His research interests are silicon photonics, optoelectronics and analogue CMOS integrated circuit design. Prof. du Plessis is a member of SPIE, a senior member of the IEEE and a registered Professional Engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).
