3D prints for teaching bone trauma

Posted on February 22, 2022

In November 2021, the Bakeng se Afrika project held a bone trauma workshop through the Forensic Anthropology Research Centre at the University of Pretoria. This workshop made use of 3D printed replicas of bones affected with blunt and ballistic trauma, sponsored by the Dirisana+ project as part of the research theme: Technology in Advancing Teaching and Learning.

The workshop Beatings, Bullets, and Broken Bones explored the analysis of blunt and ballistic trauma from a forensic (presented by Prof Ericka L'Abbé, University of Pretoria) and orthopaedic (presented by Dr Rudolph Venter, Stellenbosch University) perspective. Further lectures in 3D surface scanning and the applications of 3D imaging and printing in forensic and medical settings was also provided (presented by Dr Alison Ridel, University of Pretoria).

Teaching with 3D prints allows for rare and unique specimen to be replicated - allowing more students to work on the examples, and protect the original human remains.
