It's rather absurd how fast time flies. I can still remember my first year like it was yesterday. I, unfortunately, due to reasons beyond my control, started varsity late. I didn't know how to navigate my way around campus and had no friends. I, therefore, spent most of my time at the library as I was a day student. Movies, novels and society all paint the library using the same paintbrush: 'dull' and 'outdated'. I too unfortunately had the same perception, that was until I entered the Merensky 2 library. The staff (and not to forget Libby) were so welcoming and helped me with logging onto the computer, and how to use the printer and assisted me with all the questions I had. I ended up becoming a regular at the library until it became a safe haven for me, not only because of the warm atmosphere that it had but also because you get to interact with thousands of people who like you have the same goal to 'be someone' and 'to leave a mark on this world'.
The library also became like a compass that directed me, seeing all these dedicated individuals who would spend hours studying, motivated me to also do my utmost best. COVID-19 however forced us to turn to remote learning and I found myself missing the library the most. I was still able to continue using the online library services though. I was not able to purchase some of my prescribed textbooks when the lockdown started, but thanks to the books available online I was able to gain the necessary information and knowledge needed.
From the bottom of my heart, I would like to thank the UP library staff for helping me make my dreams come true! I managed to graduate and get accepted into the Honours programme of my dreams (Internal Auditing). I don't think I would be where I am if it wasn't for all your hard work and it surely doesn't go unnoticed. To all the first-year students - I highly recommend going to the library and using their services. It helped me and I'm sure it will help you too.
