UP Journals managed and published 14 journal titles and seven DHET-accredited titles in the first year after its launch

Posted on May 17, 2022

UP Journals celebrated its first year of existence in May 2022. The Open Journal Systems managed jointly by the Library and the Faculty of Humanities (Emerging Scholars Initiative (ESMI)) provides infrastructure for the management and publication of online journals. Our priority is to support campus partners with the publication of peer-reviewed open-access journals. These journals provide free, unrestricted access to scholars researching on the internet. Readers are generally permitted to read, download, copy, or distribute the material, provided that authors are properly acknowledged and cited. Open-access publishing has proven to be an effective method for the timely sharing of scholarly works.

The Department of Library Services uses Open Journal Systems (OJS), a comprehensive journal management and publication tool developed by the Public Knowledge Project, which is a partnership between Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia.

Our services include initial consultation on needs and requirements, set-up on OJS, hosting, and ongoing support of the software. Please note that the Library supports the technical aspects of the OJS software and the Faculty of Humanities provides advice on and assistance with the mechanics of journal editorial back-end services. Repository services are also available via our institutional repository (UPSpace) to further expose and expand the readership of the articles.

Currently, 14 journals are hosted on the UP Journal System, while a further seven titles are accredited by the Department of Higher Education and Technology (DHET). Journals from across all disciplines are welcome. Through online publishing, journal editors have access to a tool to manage the editorial workflow from submission to publication and produce quality journals. The integration of ORCID into the submission system allows authors to import their ORCID records into the journal submission process.

Staff from the Faculty of Humanities, working in partnership with the Department of Library Services (DLS), are available to support, guide, provide training, and consult with journal editors across faculties.
