Update on Mamelodi Campus Library renovations

Posted on February 01, 2022

This is an update regarding the ongoing renovations at the Mamelodi Campus Library following our previous announcement.

The renovations involve upgrading the existing infrastructure and facilities to offer users more than just a seat to study in; the intention is to facilitate an experience that creates a conducive and productive space - encouraging creativity and collaboration. Due to the challenges presented by COVID-19, the renovations will be done in a phased approached. We are pleased to announce that there has been incredible progress with the first two phases but also some delays, many of which were COVID-19 imposed.

Phase one

The first phase of the renovations included upgrading the safety of the library. Safety plays an important role in keeping our community and resources safe. The building was fitted with the latest security cameras, new security gates and access control machines. Additional exit points, smoke detectors and extractors were installed to ensure full compliance with fire safety regulations. The upgrade also included a new air conditioning system.

Phase two

Five new seminar/discussion rooms have been built to promote student collaboration as well a new student computing area where a few computers have been installed - additional computers are expected to arrive during the course of 2022. The circulation counter has also been completed, furniture has been delivered and the computers have been installed and are fully operational. Another new feature of the library is the separation of the library collection area from the rest of the library building. This allows library staff members to have control over the library collection area which means students are able to study until late as the collection is closed and protected- the library closed at earlier at 4pm before this new feature was installed.

Phase three

The remaining renovations will include upgrading the student bathrooms, a new cafeteria area in the library will be built to provide students with convenience because we understand how important it is for students to be energised throughout their studies without disrupting their daily movements. Additional computers are expected as well as the remaining furniture for the soft seating area and flooring for a few areas in the library.
