South African Librarians Day

Posted on August 26, 2021

Our library organization, LIASA was launched on the 10th of July, 1997, and South African Librarians Day (SALD) was established in honour of this day. The goals of SALD is:

  • to create awareness of the importance of LIS as a profession;
  • to create awareness on the critical role of Library and Information workers in nation building;
  • to highlight the professionalism of Library and Information practitioners in the light of LIASA being awarded Professional Body status in December, 2014.

Due to the fact that the country was under strict lockdown regulations, the Department of Library Services’ Marketing Office celebrated this auspicious day by launching a short video of Libby, our service robot, on all our social media channels such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube on Saturday the 10th of July. In this video, we paid tribute to our hardworking librarians! Our librarians are the unsung superheroes of our libraries who are always ready to assist University of Pretoria researchers, staff and students – physically in our libraries, but also virtually.

We hope you also celebrated your profession on South African Librarians Day and that you still find joy in this noble profession of ours!
