My working journey started at the Merensky Library in January, 1976. I also attended the opening of the Merensky II (referred to as the New Merensky at the time) on 26 March, 1976:
Back then, we still had the card-catalogue, telex machines, manual filing and uniforms! These were great times! The library only closed at 22:00 and we had to work evening shifts, according to a roster, from 16:00 – 22:00.
I then resigned from the Library in 1978 and explored HSRC and UNISA before becoming a stay-at-home mom for 13 years.
In January, 1996, I was again appointed at the Merensky Library, exactly 20 years after my first appointment. This lasted for 25 years and a month until retirement – the Health Sciences Library then became my home.
The scenery in the library environment changed completely. To me, this was so overwhelming! Technology was now changing the traditional library as I used to know it. I still remember this like yesterday, when one of my IT colleagues made the following remark: ‘you either remain on the platform or you get on to the train and take the ride!’ – not much of a choice.
Getting on the train then gave me many, very special opportunities that made my library career an outstanding experience for which I am very grateful. Colleagues became my working family, and that fulfilled my being. I will always cherish these memories. Thank you to everyone who contributed towards me enjoying what I was doing.
