On-site Library Services during level 3 lockdown

Posted on June 11, 2020

A phased reopening of our libraries will commence on 19 June 2020 for students and staff who are eligible to return to campus. The library will provide limited services only on Tuesdays and Fridays from 09:00-15:00.

Librarians remain available to provide virtual support for teaching, learning and research, as well as online consultation and instruction, however, our 24 hour Study Centre and Research Commons remain closed.

The following on-site services will commence from 19 June 2020 for students and staff with permits to access UP campuses:

Book pick-up service

  1. Students and staff may submit requests for circulating material (indicated on the online catalogue to be IN) by means of the following communication methods:

  1. The item will be placed on “hold” on the system (pick-up location will be the respective library).

  2. Requests for Study collection material will be handled on a case-by-case basis.

  3. Requests for reference collection material (especially research methodology books) will be handled on a case by case basis.

  4. Library staff on duty will fulfil the requests and communicate the date and time for collection with the client.

  5. Books will be handled within health and safety regulations.

Book return service

  1. All books must be returned using the book drop boxes on campus.

  2. Library staff will check the books in and hold them in quarantine for 72 hours.

  3. All loan periods are extended to limit the number of books returned.

  4. Students who do not have permission to access campuses are requested to keep their books safe until campuses reopen.

In-house digitisation

  1. All students and staff may still request (online) library material to be digitised (within copyright regulations).

  2. No one will be allowed to handle Study collection material physically.

  3. If a student or staff member is in the library and requires sections of Study collection books, he/she must ask the on-duty library staff to digitize the required pages (within copyright regulations).

Access to the library

  1. Walk-in students and staff will be restricted to enquiries at the circulation desk.

  2. Only the collecting of books will be allowed in the library.

  3. No browsing of collections will be allowed.

  4. Libraries will be opening on Tuesdays and Fridays only, from 9:00 – 15:00.

MakerSpace

  1. The MakerSpace can be contacted via email ([email protected]) OR the online booking system.

  2. The student or staff member's permission to access the campus will be verified on arrival.

  3. A consultation will be arranged via email or Google Hangouts regarding 3D printing, IoT, access to tools or innovation.

  4. Where required, payment can be made by EFT.

  5. Appointments can be made for either a Tuesday or Friday between 09:00-15:00.

  6. Access time is restricted to a maximum of 30 minutes.
