Foundations to becoming a published scholar: a postgraduate forum

Posted on January 01, 2020

The Research Commons has recently held a lauded second postgraduate forum for 2019. The postgraduate forum was held on 19 September at the Merensky 2 Library, Hatfield Campus, and was presented by two highly knowledgeable speakers – Ms Sunette Steynberg and Professor Michael Pepper.

Working with postgraduate students,  we are aware of a need to address the future academic progress of our scholars. Our students have a need for information and strategies on approaching the publication process, particularly how to generate a research article from a dissertation and how to navigate the overwhelming lists of possible journals in which to publish. Mrs Steynberg clarified the journal selection process and provided tips for identifying predatory journals, while Prof Pepper addressed the daunting process of chiselling your ‘academic baby’ into a publishable article. The presentations were extensive, yet thorough and each tackled its topic with efficiency.

The Research Commons received excellent feedback from students, who expressed their gratitude to both speakers for sharing their many years of experience and knowledge.
