Year-end function 2018

Posted on September 01, 2018

The Education Library hosted the year-end function in the Normaal Hall on the Groenkloof campus, on 30th November 2018. We celebrated past successes, gave thanks where it was due and took a trip down memory lane.

We had to say good-bye to Mrs. Hilda Kriel (Deputy Director: Product Enablement and Shared Services), Dr. Heila Pienaar (Deputy Director: Strategic Innovation) and Dr. Annette Ingram (Technical Services) who were valued staff members of the Department of Library Services, people who served the University with pride, some for more than 30 years. This meant that the event had to be special.

Planning started end of January already to ensure the booking of the venue and caterer. We had to have a variety on the menu. Good catering and good food play a huge role in the success of a function. It had to be beautiful, it had to be unique and represent our VIP's, the Education Library as well as the Faculty. Many ideas and themes were on the table, there were many brainstorms and as  time went by everything crystallized into a wonderful day that was a great success. Flowers, invitations, decorations, personnel lists, RSVP's reminders, programming and special arrangements followed. (Lots of small detail that nobody tells you about beforehand!)

We needed our Director Mr. Robert Moropa’s buy-in and wanted to make him part of our planning, therefore we placed him in the driver’s seat during one of our meetings!

The day’s programme represented the Faculty through a picture presentation and video clip demonstrating a new development at the Faculty. The Faculty is developing a new diploma and Centre for the Visually Impaired headed by prof. Ronel Ferreira from the Department of Educational Psychology. Other projects related to visual impairment includes an exhibition, pop-up books and touchable art works initiated by Dr. Raita Steyn from the Humanities Education Department.

Mr. Nelson Manganye and music students of the Dept. of Humanities Education provided the entertainment. Ms Lucille Weyer of Facilities supplied lighting and music throughout the event.

A picture is worth a thousand words. A PowerPoint presentation with photographs as illustrations for a trip down memory lane with Hilda and Heila gave brief glimpses of their activities and highlights through the years. Robert gave a short overview of achievements accomplished by the Library and thanked all staff for their hard work. Kosie Schoeman’s speech in 3 languages thanked everybody for a year’s wonderful co-operation.  Hilda’s farewell speech underlined that one should enjoy life. Something to remember when the rat race begins again in 2019!

Staff enjoyed a relaxing time at the function and strengthened relationships with one another.
