In the first half of 2018 the Digitisation Unit of the Department of Library Services investigated new services that could promote the Digitisation Unit more, but at the same time provide another stream of income. During this investigation the idea of having a Digitisation-on-Demand Service was identified.
Digitisation-on-Demand is a service where clients can place a request for the digitisation and editing of materials by digitisation staff or digitise and edit materials themselves. The digitisation and editing are then done at a cost. The service includes digitisation of works in print, flatbed high quality scans up to A3 size, large format scans up to 600 dpi, digitisation of microfiches, digitisation of slides, and digitisation of 3D objects. Editing consists of cropping, resizing, removal of scratches, colour adjustments, file conversion, and OCR (Optimal Character Recognition). In addition, clients can also request that projects be digitised and uploaded onto the Internet Archive, at a cost.
To introduce this service, the Digitisation Unit established an office in the Library Makerspace on Level 3. This service has proven to be very popular and has made clients of the Library Services more aware of the Unit and its services.
